Presenting El Jones: Unconscious Bias - Even in Canada?

Held on June 29th at 4:30 pm - Video recording available for viewing

In response to recent events and global outcries about systemic racism, Epstein Cole invited our colleagues in the Family Law Bench and Bar to spend a virtual 90 minutes with El Jones, spoken word poet, educator, professor, journalist and community activist, who shared her insight, experiences and poetry as we, in the legal community, consider our own individual responses and responsibilities today and every day.

Over 250 judges, lawyers, law students, mediators, arbitrators, mental health professionals, educators and others from across Canada attended.

El's dynamic and engaging style of communication is frank, thought-provoking and empowering. El is a past Poet Laureate of Halifax and the 2016 recipient of the Burnley “Rocky” Jones human rights award for her community work and work in prison justice. She is a co-founder of the Black Power Hour, a live radio show in Halifax with incarcerated people that creates space for people inside to share their creative work and discuss contemporary social and political issues, and along with this work, she supports women in Nova Institution in writing and sharing their voices.  Her book of poetry and essays on state violence, “Canada Is So Polite,” will be released this winter.
